Introduction： In recent years, many scholarly papers using Chinese financial data have been published in leading academic journals. This increase in attention is not surprising, as China is a large transition economy, moving away from a planned economy to a market-oriented one, and has now become the world’s second largest economy. Simply put, China is interesting and important. However, some studies on China suffer shortcomings. First, given that most modern financial theory originates in the West, particularly the United States, many papers that study China use Western theories and concepts to explain their empirical findings.2 However, while it may sometimes be appropriate to view Chinese empirical findings from a Western perspective, other times it is not. Second, many papers seem to misunderstand (or are not aware of) important regulatory issues; the legal, financial, and institutional environments; and business customs and practices in China. Third, many papers that study China, even those published recently, are now simply outdated. The economic growth in China during the past two decades has been explosive. During this time period, many changes have taken place, including many regulatory changes and introductions of new rules that affect corporate governance in China.
